  AIRLINE UPDATES
The U.S. Department of Justice approved the proposed merger of United Airlines and Continental Airlines. To obtain that approval, the airlines had to open the door to Southwest Airlines at Continental's hub in Newark, N.J., where it is the dominant carrier. The Justice Department said leasing takeoff and landing permission to Southwest in Newark cleared up its main competitive concern. The deal is expected to close by October 1, 2010. Mexicana Airlines has suspended all flight operations until further notice. The suspension applies to all Mexicana, MexicanaLink, and MexicanaClick flights. All flights scheduled have been cancelled indefinitely. Travelers with reservations are advised to consult the company’s website for additional guidance and information. (Travel.state.gov, August 28)
SMART PHONE USE GROWS AMONG TRAVELERS
Nearly a third of all cell phones used among travelers in the U.S. are smart phones. Smart phones are Web-enabled devices that make surfing the internet for information easy and accessible for people on the go. About 20% of U.S. travelers have downloaded one or more travel-related applications to their smart phones. Mobile devices will play an increasingly important role in the distribution and sale of travel services. These travel-related applications allow users to more conveniently reserve, track, and alter their trips. (USAToday.com, August 30).
