  AIRLINE UPDATES
Continental Airlines will not layoff any clerical or management employees until at least March of 2011. The carrier which recently merged with United Airlines, will assume the United name and is working out details of the merger before announcing which jobs are redundant.

Southwest Airlines now classifies mechanical difficulties, “as acts of God” or occurrences outside of the airline’s control, listing such mishaps among storms, earthquakes and wars. (Eturbonews.com, Jul7 26)

Bahrain is moving to privatize its’ national airline, Gulf Air. Most Bahrainis fear the loss of jobs, anticipated with privatization, as the carrier is one of the largest employers in Bahrain. (News.Airwise.com, July 27)
  CONTRACTS ACCEPTED AND REJECTED
Spirit Airline’s pilots have ratified a new five year contract, containing pay increases and signing bonuses. The parties have been negotiating for four years, culminating with pilots striking in June which shut down the carrier for six days.

Pilots and crews of Japan Airlines have indicated they will accept substantial pay cuts and force reductions to keep the airline in business.

The Unite union announced it will take legal action against British Airways for withdrawing travel perks from cabin crew employees who participated in recent strikes. (News.Airwise.com, July 27)
  FEES REVENUE SOARS 
The annual combined income of the world’s airlines for a-la-carte fees topped $13.5 billion in 2009 up more than $3 billion from 2008. These are unbundled charges levied by carriers for, checked bags, food and beverage, pre-assigned seats, blankets and pillows and more. Airlines have found a lucrative income stream in ancillary fees, indicating fees are here to stay and new ways to charge the flying passenger will be devised. (Businesstravelnews.com, July 26)   
  TERMINAL FACELIFTS
Houston Hobby’s newly renovated main concourse and ticketing lobby is now open and ready for the public. New escalators were installed and walls have been removed to give the terminal a more expansive feel and five gates have been added to receive more airplane traffic.

Houston Bush Intercontinental Airport will soon begin the second phase of a $250 million renovation plan with updates to the baggage-claim and passenger drop-off areas. (USAToday.com, July 27)

New Delhi International Airport’s new Terminal 3 is reported to be India’s largest public building. The space-age glass and steel structure of T3 will replace T2 for processing international airline traffic. (Aerbt.co.uk, July 26)
